Leh, April 27, KNT: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, expanding the total number of districts from two to seven.

In a statement shared on social media, the Lieutenant Governor said the new districts will include Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass, describing the move as a “historic” step aimed at addressing long-pending demands of the people.

He said the decision, which had earlier received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024, is intended to strengthen grassroots governance and improve delivery of public services, particularly in remote and far-flung areas.

According to the Lieutenant Governor, the creation of new districts will help decentralize administration and bring governance closer to citizens.

He added that the move aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for development in the region and is expected to open new avenues for growth, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The Union Territory currently has two districts—Leh and Kargil—and the addition of five more will significantly expand its administrative framework.

The Lieutenant Governor said efforts will be made to ensure that the benefits of the decision reach all sections of society. [KNT]
