Jammu, May 23, KNT: Former minister Lal Singh on Saturday alleged that the Lieutenant Governor-led administration was resorting to pressure tactics, including demolition notices and arrests, to silence residents opposing the proposed Tarakote ropeway project in Katra.

Speaking to reporters, Singh claimed that people protesting against the ropeway had been identified and threatened with action.

“This is Jammu today, where people have no voice,” Singh said.

He alleged that some protesters had been warned that they could face detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA) if they continued to oppose the project.

“Those who protested against the Katra ropeway have been identified and are being threatened, being told that if you speak up you will be jailed under PSA. Is this democracy?” Singh said.

He said governments should have the capacity to listen to public concerns rather than intimidate people.

“If the business of people is hit, you must listen to them without threatening them,” he said.

Opposing the proposed ropeway, Singh claimed that the project would affect the natural landscape and religious character of the Tarakote hills.

“This ropeway project will diminish the beauty of Tarakote hills and there will be mess,” he said.

Singh also alleged that demolition notices and arrests were being used as part of a broader crackdown against those opposing the project.  [KNT]
