Srinagar, Sep 29: KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday withdrew three Bills seeking amendments to laws governing the salaries and allowances of ministers and legislators, as well as pensions of former members of the legislature, after objections were raised by BJP members in the House.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had introduced the Bills during the ongoing Autumn Session, announced their withdrawal amid the opposition to the proposed changes. He told the House that he was never in favour of the proposal and said that if even one member opposed it, the Bills would not be passed.
The three legislations had been introduced on Monday as L.A. Bill No. 13 of 2026, seeking amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Ministers’ and Ministers of State Salaries Act, 1956; L.A. Bill No. 14 of 2026, seeking amendments to the Salaries and Allowances of Members of the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature Act, 1960; and L.A. Bill No. 15 of 2026, proposing amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature Members’ Pension Act, 1984.
The Bills had sought changes to the existing legal provisions relating to financial entitlements of ministers and members of the legislature, including salaries, allowances and pensions.
Their introduction in the Assembly had triggered objections from BJP legislators, who questioned the proposed increase in the financial benefits available to elected representatives.
The withdrawal came a day after the Bills were tabled in the House as part of the government’s legislative business during the Autumn Session.
The Assembly proceedings on Tuesday also included consideration of other government legislation introduced during the ongoing session. [KNT]
