Srinagar, April 27, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday criticized the government’s decision to declare Darul Uloom Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom in Shopian as an unlawful entity under the UAPA, calling the move unjust and detrimental to underprivileged sections.

In a statement posted on social media, Mufti said the institution had served as a center of education for students who could not afford expensive schooling, and claimed it had contributed to producing professionals who served the country.

She alleged that the action reflected what she described as prejudice and questioned the basis of the decision, stating that such measures without what she termed “solid evidence” would negatively impact access to education.

Mufti further said the move could affect students from economically weaker backgrounds who relied on such institutions for schooling.

The remarks come amid ongoing political reactions to the administration’s decision to ban the Shopian-based institute under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, citing alleged links, irregularities, and misuse of premises.

Authorities have maintained that the action was based on inputs and verification, and aimed at ensuring compliance with law and security considerations. [KNT]
