Middle East on Edge as US Launches Fresh Strikes on Iran After Attacks on Commercial Ships

The Middle East witnessed a sharp escalation after the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of a broader regional conflict and renewed disruption to global energy supplies.

The latest military action follows attacks on three merchant vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. According to US officials, the strikes targeted multiple Iranian military installations after Washington accused Tehran of violating a recently negotiated ceasefire by attacking international shipping.

US Central Command said the operation was aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities responsible for threatening commercial navigation. Iranian media reported explosions near military facilities in southern Iran, while Tehran strongly condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of escalating tensions and violating previous understandings.

Reports indicate that more than 80 Iranian military targets, including coastal radar systems, air defence installations and anti-ship missile sites, were struck during the latest operation, making it one of the most extensive US military actions against Iran since hostilities resumed earlier this year.

The crisis has centred on the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil and liquefied natural gas trade normally passes. Maritime security agencies have raised the threat level after multiple vessels came under attack in the area. Among the affected ships were a Qatari LNG tanker and a Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker, both of which reportedly sustained damage.

The deteriorating security environment has already impacted global energy markets. International oil prices rose following the attacks amid growing concerns that further instability in the Gulf could disrupt crude oil exports from the region. At the same time, the United States reinstated sanctions affecting Iranian oil exports, increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

Iran has maintained that it retains the right to regulate navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and has repeatedly rejected what it describes as foreign interference in the strategically important waterway. Iranian leaders have warned that continued military pressure could invite further retaliation.

The renewed confrontation comes despite diplomatic efforts over recent weeks aimed at restoring maritime security and reducing tensions through indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Earlier talks had produced a temporary understanding intended to facilitate the safe passage of commercial shipping, but the latest developments have cast serious doubt over the future of those negotiations.

The developments have also dominated discussions at the NATO summit in Turkey, where regional security, maritime protection and energy supply routes have emerged as key issues. Several countries have expressed concern that continued escalation between Washington and Tehran could destabilise the wider Middle East and threaten global economic stability.

Analysts believe the latest military exchanges mark one of the most serious escalations in the Gulf in recent months, with the possibility of further retaliatory action by either side remaining high. International observers continue to monitor the situation closely amid fears that the confrontation could widen beyond the Strait of Hormuz and draw additional regional actors into the conflict.
