MVD Proposes Cameras, GPS Tracking and Digital Enforcement to Reduce Accidents in Central Kashmir’s Budgam
Budgam, June 13, KNT: Budgam district is set to witness a major transformation in traffic management and road safety under a comprehensive transportation and mobility framework prepared by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), which proposes the introduction of Artificial Intelligence-based surveillance, automated enforcement systems and modern traffic management tools across key corridors.
The report, prepared by ‘Team Enforcement’ under the Motor Vehicles Department, outlines an ambitious roadmap aimed at improving road safety, reducing accidents and strengthening transportation infrastructure in one of Kashmir’s fastest-growing districts.
A key component of the proposal is the deployment of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), which would include AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), speed detection cameras, red-light violation detection systems, GPS-based bus tracking and integrated e-challan mechanisms.
Officials believe the technology-driven system will help improve traffic discipline, strengthen enforcement and enable real-time monitoring of road networks across the district.
The report as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust identifies Budgam as a strategically important district connecting Srinagar city, airport corridors, tourism destinations and rural hinterland areas, making efficient mobility planning essential for future growth.
Apart from technology-based interventions, the report proposes intensified enforcement measures, including permit verification, fitness inspections, overloading checks, passenger safety inspections and emergency exit inspections in buses.
Road safety forms a major focus of the strategy. The document calls for identification of accident-prone locations, road safety audits, stricter enforcement against overloading and overspeeding, improved pedestrian infrastructure, enhanced signage and driver awareness programs.
The report further recommends the expansion of public transport infrastructure, dedicated parking facilities, bus bays, improved rural connectivity and environmentally sustainable transportation systems.
According to the document, the implementation of intelligent traffic systems and scientific enforcement practices is expected to reduce fatal accidents, improve emergency response mechanisms and create a safer transportation ecosystem for residents and visitors alike.
The proposed measures are part of a broader effort to modernize transportation governance and accommodate the district’s growing mobility needs amid rapid urbanization and increasing traffic volumes. [KNT]
