NH-44 Remains Closed as Restoration Work Continues; Authorities Advise Against Travel
Jammu, August 1, KNT: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remained closed for all types of traffic on Saturday as restoration work continued following heavy rainfall, landslides and shooting stones at multiple locations, officials said.
According to the Traffic Police, restoration work on the single carriageway is still in progress near the Dawal Bridge in the Samroli area of Udhampur district. Heavy rainfall continues to lash the Ramban sector, where incidents of shooting stones and mudslides have been reported from several vulnerable stretches, including Banihal.
The highway remains unsafe for vehicular movement as the road surface has become highly slushy, muddy and extremely slippery due to continuous rainfall. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) personnel, assisted by the Traffic Police, are engaged in round-the-clock restoration work to clear the road and restore traffic.
Authorities have advised commuters not to undertake travel on NH-44 until the road is declared safe for movement. People have also been urged not to pay heed to rumours and instead rely only on official updates issued by the Traffic Police and Traffic Control Units regarding the highway status.
Officials said restoration efforts are continuing despite adverse weather conditions, and traffic will be allowed only after the highway is found fit for safe movement. [KNT]
