Srinagar, Feb 15, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded significant progress in mushroom cultivation during the financial year 2025–26, with 9.576 lakh pasteurised spawned compost bags prepared and distributed among farmers across the Union Territory.

Official data indicates that the distributed compost units resulted in an estimated mushroom production of 1,061.6 metric tonnes during the period under review.

Officials said the initiative has strengthened diversification in agriculture and allied sectors, providing an additional income stream to farmers, particularly small and marginal growers. The distribution of quality compost bags ensured standardised cultivation practices and improved productivity.

Mushroom farming has emerged as a viable enterprise in J&K due to favourable climatic conditions, low land requirements and quick crop cycles. Authorities have been promoting scientific cultivation methods and providing technical support to enhance output.

The programme is aimed at encouraging youth and progressive farmers to adopt mushroom cultivation as a sustainable agri-based venture. [KNT]
