Srinagar, Sep 28, KNT:Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone on Monday backed the statehood resolution in the Legislative Assembly, saying that 1947, rather than 2019, should be the reference point while discussing Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional and political position.
Speaking during the debate on the statehood resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lone said that Jammu and Kashmir had “only lost provisions” since 1947 and had gained nothing.
“Many governments came, many left, so will you,” Lone said, while addressing the BJP members.
He said the historical context of Jammu and Kashmir would continue to remain relevant irrespective of changes in governments.
Lone also criticised the present Union Territory administrative arrangement, describing what he called the “UT lottery system” for bureaucrats as a curse for Jammu and Kashmir.
Referring to the changes made to Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional and political position over the decades, Lone said, “We will take back everything you’ve taken from us.”
The Peoples Conference leader said the demand being discussed in the House should be viewed against the historical context of 1947 and the subsequent changes in the relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the Union.
His intervention came amid a heated debate over the statehood resolution, with BJP legislators protesting against references to earlier Assembly resolutions, including the 2000 autonomy resolution.
The Assembly subsequently passed the resolution seeking restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir amid continued protests by BJP members. [KNT]
