New Delhi, March 23, KNT: The Centre has announced that ration card holders across the country will receive three months’ worth of foodgrains in April 2026 under its public distribution system (PDS).

The move is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted food security for beneficiaries, particularly in view of logistical and seasonal challenges that may arise in the coming months, officials said.

Under the plan, eligible households will be provided advance supplies of essential grains, including rice and wheat, covering April, May and June in a single distribution cycle.

Officials said the decision is expected to benefit millions of ration card holders nationwide, especially economically vulnerable sections dependent on subsidized food grains.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader welfare strategy to streamline distribution and reduce the need for repeated visits to ration shops, while also ensuring buffer availability at the household level.

State governments and union territories have been advised to coordinate with local authorities and fair price shop dealers to facilitate smooth and timely distribution.

India’s public distribution system is one of the largest food security programmes in the world, covering a significant portion of the population through subsidized food grain supply under the National Food Security framework. [KNT]
