Baramulla, April 15, KNT: Police on Wednesday said that 13 persons have so for been arrested and 13 more identified in connection with alleged vandalism inside a school in North Kashmir’s Sopore, where students had been protesting against a ‘tainted’ teacher.

According to police, the arrests were made after individuals, described as “miscreants,” allegedly entered the school premises during what officials said was a peaceful protest by students and damaged property.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining identified individuals.

The development follows a controversy that had erupted earlier over allegations of harassment involving a teacher at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore. The issue had triggered protests by students, drawing attention from local authorities and prompting an official inquiry.

In its statement, police maintained that the student protest itself was peaceful, but the situation escalated when outsiders allegedly infiltrated the campus and engaged in vandalism, leading to damage of school property.

Officials did not specify the extent of the damage but said evidence has been collected and further legal action is expected as the probe progresses.

Authorities have urged restraint and emphasized the need to allow the investigation into both the vandalism and the earlier allegations to proceed through legal channels.

The incident remains under investigation, with police indicating that further arrests cannot be ruled out. [KNT]
