Srinagar, May 7, KNT: Deputy Inspector General of Police, Railways, Zahid Naseem Manhas, on Tuesday, reviewed the security preparedness of the Kashmir railway network during a visit to the Railway Police Kashmir Zonal Headquarters in Srinagar, officials said.
The visit included a detailed assessment of operational readiness and existing security arrangements along the Kashmir railway corridor amid expectations of increased passenger movement in the coming season.
Officials said the DIG was received at the headquarters by senior officers of the Railway Police Kashmir and later chaired a high-level meeting focusing on security coordination, train operations, and challenges faced by the force.
During the meeting, Manhas stressed the need for maintaining a strong security grid along the railway corridor and asked officers to ensure strict implementation of safety protocols and contingency plans.
He also called for increased coordination among different security agencies and advised officials to conduct frequent mock drills to improve emergency response capabilities.
According to officials present in the meeting, discussions also focused on passenger movement, freight and parcel train management, and deployment-related requirements across railway stations and tracks in Kashmir.
Senior Superintendent of Police Railways Kashmir, Wasim Qadri, briefed the DIG about current train traffic, passenger footfall, and operational issues being faced by the Railway Police.
Officials said the DIG appreciated the role of the Railway Police in maintaining security during the operation of the Vande Bharat train service in Kashmir and described the incident-free movement of the train as an important achievement.
The Vande Bharat service, considered a major infrastructure and connectivity project in the region, has remained under heightened security coverage since its launch.
Sources said the review assumes significance as authorities expect a rise in tourist and passenger movement during the coming months, increasing pressure on railway infrastructure and security arrangements.
The Kashmir railway network has witnessed expanding operations in recent years, with authorities placing increasing focus on surveillance, anti-sabotage measures, and coordinated security deployment along sensitive stretches.
Officials said the meeting concluded with directions to maintain proactive vigilance and strengthen preparedness to deal with any security or emergency situation across the railway corridor. [KNT]
