Father Feared Dead After Saving Son From Drowning in Lidder River at Pahalgam

Pahalgam, May 31, KNT: A man from Srinagar was feared dead after reportedly jumping into the Lidder River near Langanbal area of Pahalgam to save his son from drowning, triggering a rescue operation involving police, SDRF teams and local residents.

The incident occurred amid distressing circumstances involving a Srinagar family visiting the area, with witnesses saying the father risked his own life to rescue his child after the latter slipped into the river.

The man was identified as Muhammad Ashraf Mir, reportedly a resident of the Jawahar Nagar area of Srinagar.

According to preliminary reports, the family comprising around 16 members had halted near the stream after traffic congestion reportedly prevented them from moving ahead.

During the stop, a child identified as Fahad Mir allegedly slipped into the Lidder River.

Witnesses said Muhammad Ashraf Mir immediately jumped into the river and succeeded in rescuing the child.

However, after saving his son, he himself reportedly drowned in the fast-flowing waters and was feared dead.

Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations.

People present there were also assisting authorities in the search efforts.

Officials said rescue operations were continuing till last reports and further details were awaited. [KNT]
