Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced a crop loan relief package aimed at cooperative bank borrowers, including a full waiver for certain categories of farmers and partial relief for others, in a move projected to benefit more than 14 lakh cultivators across the state.

The package includes a complete waiver of crop loans up to Rs 50,000 for marginal farmers who borrowed through cooperative banks, while farmers with larger loan amounts will receive graded relief under the scheme.

Under the announced measures, farmers holding higher-value cooperative crop loans will be eligible for a relief component of Rs 5,000, according to the state government’s framework.

The waiver and relief package applies to cooperative crop loans reportedly availed between May 2025 and February 2026.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of continuing concerns among farming communities over debt burdens, crop losses and rising cultivation costs.

State government estimates suggest the relief measures could involve expenditure exceeding Rs 2,000 crore and provide financial assistance to a large section of cooperative bank borrowers engaged in agriculture.

The decision has triggered political debate in Tamil Nadu.

Opposition parties and some farmer representatives have questioned whether the package fully addresses earlier promises of broader farm loan waivers, arguing that sections of indebted farmers may remain outside the scope of the relief framework.

The Tamil Nadu government, however, has defended the package as a targeted intervention designed to assist vulnerable farming households while balancing fiscal considerations.

The announcement is expected to assume political and economic significance as agricultural distress and rural indebtedness continue to remain major public policy issues in the state. [KNT]
