Srinagar, April 20, KNT: The Water Works Division Srinagar has announced a disruption in potable water supply across major parts of the city and adjoining areas for approximately 48 hours starting April 21.

According to a public notice issued by the Executive Engineer, the disruption is due to urgent repair works on the Sindh Power Canal (Phase III) being carried out by the authorities in Ganderbal on April 21 and 22.

The repair work is expected to affect raw water supply to key water treatment plants, including Alusteng and Rangil, leading to a temporary interruption in potable water distribution.

The supply disruption will begin from 6:00 am on April 21 and is likely to continue until 6:00 am on April 23.

Authorities have advised residents to store sufficient water in advance to meet their requirements during the affected period.

Several areas across Srinagar, including parts of Soura, Habak, Nigeen, Zadibal, Hawal, Nowhatta, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal, Rainawari, Khanyar, Nawab Bazar, Karan Nagar, Eidgah, Batmaloo, Qamarwari, and adjoining localities, are expected to face the impact.

Officials said the inconvenience caused is regretted and assured that efforts are being made to complete the repair work within the scheduled timeframe.

The department has also issued contact numbers for the provincial control room for addressing complaints related to water shortage. [KNT]

Sindh Power Canal (Phase III) | Key Facts

The Sindh Power Canal (Phase III) is a major water channel in Jammu and Kashmir that carries raw water from the Sindh Nallah in Ganderbal district to key water treatment plants supplying Srinagar city.

It plays a critical role in feeding treatment facilities such as Alusteng and Rangil, which in turn provide potable water to large parts of Srinagar and adjoining areas.

Any disruption or maintenance work on this canal directly impacts water supply in the city, often leading to temporary shortages or interruptions.

The canal requires periodic repair and maintenance to ensure uninterrupted flow, structural safety, and efficient distribution of raw water to treatment plants.

Given its importance in the urban water supply network, authorities usually issue advance public advisories before undertaking repair works to allow residents to prepare for temporary disruptions.
