Britain will consider “increasing sanctions” against Russia following findings from five European states that opposition leader Alexei Navalny was killed by dart-frog toxin in a Russian prison, UK foreign minister Yvette Cooper said Sunday.

“We continue to look at coordinated action, including increasing sanctions on the Russian regime,” Cooper told the BBC from the Munich Security Conference, where the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden announced findings that the Russian state was a prime suspect for poisoning Navalny two years ago.

Navalny, a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, died in a Russian prison in mysterious conditions on February 16, 2024, while serving a 19-year sentence.

Alexei Navalny

Who is he?

Alexei Navalny was a Russian opposition politician, anti-corruption activist and one of the most prominent critics of President Vladimir Putin.

He became widely known in the 2010s for:

• Investigating alleged corruption among Russian elites
• Publishing viral YouTube exposés
• Organizing anti-government protests
• Attempting to run for president in 2018 (he was barred from the ballot)

He built a large following, especially among younger Russians.

Why was he in the news?

Navalny made global headlines for three major reasons:

  1. Poisoning in 2020

In August 2020, he fell severely ill on a flight in Russia.
He was later medically evacuated to Germany, where laboratories concluded he had been poisoned with a nerve agent from the Novichok group.

Western governments accused the Russian state of involvement.
The Kremlin denied responsibility.

  1. Return to Russia and Arrest (2021)

After recovering in Germany, Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021.
He was immediately arrested on charges related to parole violations in an earlier case he said was politically motivated.

  1. Imprisonment and Death (2024)

He remained imprisoned under harsh conditions.
In February 2024, Russian authorities announced that Navalny had died in a penal colony in the Arctic region.

Western leaders and his supporters blamed the Russian government.
Russian officials denied wrongdoing.

Why was he allegedly poisoned?

According to international investigations:

• Navalny had exposed alleged corruption among top Russian officials.
• He had become the most visible domestic critic of Putin.
• He was organizing political networks across Russia.

Many Western governments concluded the poisoning was intended to silence or eliminate him politically.

Russia has consistently denied state involvement and rejected those accusations.

Important Clarification

There is no publicly proven court verdict establishing exactly who ordered the poisoning.
However, multiple independent laboratories confirmed the presence of a Novichok-type nerve agent.
