Pahalgam, May 4, KNT: Pony riders in Pahalgam have raised strong concerns over a “one license, one horse” policy introduced by the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA), saying the move would severely impact their livelihoods.
The decision, announced by the Chief Executive Officer of PDA, is aimed at curbing pollution and improving tourist management in the popular tourist destination.
However, pony riders said the restriction would limit their earning capacity, as many operators depend on multiple horses to sustain their families during the tourism season.
“This is injustice and tantamount to depriving us of our right to earn a living,” several pony riders said, expressing resentment over the policy.
They also urged the authorities to consider alternative measures, including opening additional routes and creating more opportunities for operators, instead of imposing strict limitations.
In addition to the licensing restriction, the administration has issued directions making uniforms mandatory for pony riders and barring the movement of horses on footpaths, along the banks of Lidder Nallah, and in garden areas.
Officials said the measures are intended to regulate tourist flow, improve cleanliness, and reduce environmental pressure in Pahalgam. [KNT]
