Khyber Cement Hosts Inaugural Architectural Conclave on Sustainable Urban Development

Srinagar, August 4, KNT: Khyber Cement on Tuesday hosted the inaugural edition of the Khyber Cement Architectural Conclave (KCAC) 2026 in Srinagar, bringing together architects, urban planners, engineers, conservationists and former policymakers to deliberate on the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s built environment.

Held at Ramada Encore, Raj Bagh, the conclave focused on issues relating to structural safety, sustainable construction, climate-responsive architecture, urban planning and the preservation of the region’s architectural identity amid rapid urbanisation.

A panel discussion on “Sustainability and Responsible Construction” featured architect and urban design academic Umar Farooq, architectural historian and conservation architect Dr. Sameer Hamdani, and heritage conservationist M. Saleem Beg. Moderated by senior journalist Masood Hussain, the discussion explored challenges related to seismic safety, climate resilience, heritage conservation and the need to balance modern development with traditional architectural practices.

Speaking at the event, Umar Tramboo, Director – Corporate and Strategy, Khyber Cement, said the conclave reflected the company’s long-term commitment to encouraging dialogue on safer and more sustainable construction practices in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Our vision is to contribute not only to stronger buildings but also to a stronger future for Jammu and Kashmir by encouraging meaningful discussions around safety, sustainability and architectural identity,” he said.

Masood Hussain described the conclave as an initiative aimed at creating a common platform for stakeholders involved in shaping the region’s built environment and expressed hope that future editions would witness wider participation from all sectors.

Wasim Ahmed Khan, Chief of Sales and Customer Relations at Khyber Cement, said the conclave was intended to facilitate discussions on the challenges confronting the construction sector, including balancing cost, quality, safety and long-term sustainability.

The company said the conclave would be organised annually as a knowledge-sharing platform for architects, engineers, planners, developers and policymakers to promote better building practices and encourage informed discussions on the changing urban landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
