Mirwaiz Urges Govt to Facilitate Religious Observances

Srinagar, Feb 15, KNT: An Istaqbal-i-Ramadan programme was held in Srinagar on Saturday under the chairmanship of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, with participation of scores of clerics and religious scholars from different parts of the Valley.
The gathering discussed preparations for the holy month of Ramadan and deliberated on arrangements for religious observances at Jamia Masjid Srinagar. Addressing the meeting, Mirwaiz stressed the importance of facilitating religious obligations during the month and called for an atmosphere conducive to congregational prayers.
After the culmination of the meeting, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told reporters that the community expects the government to allow the smooth conduct of religious programmes without restrictions. “We expect the government will facilitate the religious obligations and will not impose any ban on religious congregations at Jamia Masjid Srinagar. We should be allowed to perform Jumat-ul-Vidah, Shab-e-Qadar and other programmes without hindrance,” he said.
Referring to developments in different parts of the country, the Mirwaiz said that as a religious leader it was his responsibility to raise his voice for those he described as being suppressed. He alleged that mosques were being demolished and Muslims were facing attacks in certain areas.
Participants at the meeting reiterated the need for peaceful observance of Ramadan and urged authorities to ensure that worshippers are not inconvenienced.
The programme concluded with prayers for peace and well-being. [KNT]
