Srinagar, Jan 14, KNT: Protests were reported from several parts of Kashmir as inhabitants accused the Power Development Department of failing to repair damaged transformers and restore electricity supply.
In Srinagar’s Iqbal Colony, Mehjoor Nagar, inhabitants staged a protest alleging that the department had not replaced or repaired a transformer that had remained defunct for over ten days. They said the colony, comprising dozens of households, was plunged into darkness and officials had failed to respond to repeated pleas.
One of the protesters appealed to the concerned MLA and the Chief Engineer of the department to intervene and ensure immediate restoration of power.
A similar protest was reported from Changoo hamlet in Dooru area of south Kashmir, where inhabitants alleged that a transformer had developed a technical fault two weeks earlier and had not been repaired.
Meanwhile, inhabitants of Mirgund and Hajin in north Kashmir, and Zainapora, Cheremarg, Reshipora, Sofipora, Hydergund, Mujmarg and Awneera in south Kashmir also staged demonstrations, alleging inadequate power supply despite metered connections. Students and traders said frequent and unscheduled power cuts were causing inconvenience.
The then Chief Engineer of the Power Development Department, Bashir Ahmed Khan, had stated that damaged transformers were repaired promptly and assured that a team would be deputed to Iqbal Colony to verify the complaints and address public grievances. [KNT]
