Katra, Mar 3, KNT: Opposition to the proposed ropeway project from Tarakote gathered momentum in Katra on Tuesday after former MLA from Reasi, Ajay Nanda, along with hundreds of people, including shopkeepers, joined an ongoing signature campaign against the initiative.

The campaign, launched by locals to register their protest, witnessed increased participation following Nanda’s presence. He signed the petition alongside members of the public and expressed solidarity with the concerns being raised by stakeholders.

Addressing media persons on the sidelines of the campaign, Nanda said that any developmental project must take into account the interests of pilgrims and the local population. He maintained that imposing an unnecessary financial burden on devotees visiting the shrine and on local citizens dependent on pilgrimage-related activities would be unjustified.

Participants in the campaign reiterated that while development is essential, it should not adversely affect traditional livelihoods linked to the pilgrimage route. They argued that alternative measures should be explored to improve facilities without disrupting existing systems or increasing costs for visitors.

The signature drive has been continuing in Katra for the past several days, drawing support from traders, transporters and other stakeholders associated with the pilgrimage economy. Organizers said the collected signatures would be submitted to the concerned authorities to formally register their objections.

The ropeway project from Tarakote has sparked debate in the region, with supporters highlighting improved accessibility, while opponents fear economic and social repercussions for locals. [KNT]
