Srinagar, March 29, KNT: Fresh snowfall was recorded in the higher reaches of north Kashmir on Sunday, with Tulail Valley in Bandipora district receiving around four inches of accumulation so far, officials said.

The snowfall led to a noticeable dip in temperatures across the region, marking a sudden shift in weather conditions after relatively stable days.

Officials said that Tulail Valley experienced continuous snowfall since early morning, covering roads, rooftops and open fields under a fresh white layer. Other upper reaches of north Kashmir also reported light to moderate snowfall.

In contrast, plains including Srinagar and adjoining areas witnessed intermittent rainfall, bringing a chill back into the air.

Meteorological officials said the weather system is part of a western disturbance affecting Jammu and Kashmir, leading to precipitation in both higher and lower regions.

“Snowfall has been reported in higher reaches including Tulail, while rains are occurring in plains. Temperatures have dropped across most parts,” an official from the Meteorological Department said.

Residents in Tulail said the fresh snowfall disrupted normal movement but added to water reserves crucial for the summer months.

Road connectivity in some upper areas remained slow due to snow accumulation, while Gurez-Bandipora road was closed due to slippery conditions.

In Srinagar and other plain areas, people were seen carrying umbrellas as light to moderate rains continued through the day, lowering daytime temperatures.

Locals said the sudden weather change brought back winter-like conditions, with many returning to warmer clothing.

“It feels like winter again. The cold has increased since morning,” said a Srinagar resident.

The Meteorological Department has advised caution in higher reaches, warning of slippery roads and possible disruptions in isolated areas.

Further precipitation is expected over the next 24 hours, officials said, before gradual improvement in weather conditions. [KNT]
