Kupwara, April 20, KNT: The Forest Department, in coordination with police, seized two vehicles carrying illegally transported timber during a late-night naka operation in Shanoo Langate area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The operation was conducted by Handwara Police along with territorial staff of the Forest Department and the Forest Protection Force following specific information about illegal timber movement.
Officials said the intercepted vehicles, bearing registration numbers JK-09C-0590 and JK05J-4492, were found loaded with deodar sawn timber during inspection.
A total of 25 pieces of timber, measuring approximately 40.91 cubic feet, were recovered on the spot.
The seized timber along with both vehicles has been taken into custody under relevant legal provisions, officials said.
Authorities have initiated further investigation to ascertain the source, ownership, and intended destination of the timber, and to identify those involved in the illegal activity.
Divisional Forest Officer, Langate, said strict action would be taken against those involved in illegal forest activities and emphasized continued enforcement to curb such practices.
The official added that the operation was carried out in close coordination with Handwara Police and similar drives will continue in the region.
Legal proceedings are being initiated under the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Act, 1927, and rules framed thereunder. [KNT]
