Pahalgam, April 22, KNT: Twenty-six people, including 25 tourists and one local civilian, were killed when gunmen opened fire at Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam in south Kashmir, in one of the deadliest attacks in South Kashmir in recent years.

The attack unfolded in the popular meadow area, often referred to as “Mini Switzerland,” where tourists had gathered during peak travel season. According to reports, heavily armed militants entered the area and opened indiscriminate fire, triggering panic and chaos among visitors.

The victims included tourists from several Indian states as well as a foreign national from Nepal. The lone local civilian killed was identified as Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a resident of the Pahalgam area, who was working as a pony operator and reportedly tried to assist tourists during the attack.

Among those killed were individuals from diverse backgrounds, including serving and former professionals, families on vacation, and newly married couples. Confirmed victims included Indian Navy officer Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, Indian Air Force official Tage Hailyang, and a US-based technology professional Bitan Adhikari, highlighting the wide cross-section of those affected.

Other victims included tourists from states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, reflecting the nationwide footprint of the tragedy. Many were travelling with families and were caught in the attack without warning.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers targeted civilians at close range in a confined meadow surrounded by forest, leaving little scope for escape. Some survivors recounted that victims were separated and shot, intensifying the brutality of the incident.

The assault lasted for a brief but intense period, after which the attackers fled the scene. Security forces later launched a large-scale search operation across south Kashmir to track down those responsible.

Medical response to the attack was led by local facilities, including a small hospital in Pahalgam that handled both the injured and the deceased despite limited infrastructure. The scale of casualties placed immediate strain on available resources.

The attack marked a major setback for Kashmir’s tourism sector, which had been witnessing a steady revival. The targeting of a high-footfall tourist destination raised concerns over security preparedness in such areas and triggered cancellations of travel plans in the immediate aftermath.

Authorities condemned the attack and pledged action against those responsible. Security arrangements in tourist zones are subsequently reviewed, and additional deployments are made in vulnerable areas.

The incident drew nationwide and international condemnation, with leaders and public figures expressing grief and solidarity with the victims’ families.

The Pahalgam attack stands out not only for the number of casualties but also for its symbolic impact — targeting civilians in a location associated with peace, tourism, and natural beauty. [KNT]
