Srinagar, May 3, KNT: A massive anti-drug rally was held in Srinagar on Sunday, drawing participation from senior officials, public representatives, traders, and schoolchildren as part of an ongoing campaign against substance abuse in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The rally, organized as a large public march from TRC to Lal Chowk, was led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and witnessed significant public mobilization aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse.

The event forms part of a broader 100-day campaign launched in April to combat narcotics use and trafficking across the Union Territory, with authorities emphasizing both enforcement and community participation.

Officials said the Srinagar rally was conceived as a major public outreach initiative, urging citizens from all sections of society to support efforts to curb the growing drug problem.

Participation in the rally cut across sectors, including traders, civil society members, students, and government officials, reflecting what authorities described as a “whole-of-society” approach to addressing substance abuse.

According to officials, the rally was not merely symbolic but aimed at building awareness and resistance against drug addiction, particularly among youth. Reports indicated that tens of thousands of participants were expected to join the event, highlighting the scale of the campaign.

The anti-drug campaign has already seen multiple activities across Kashmir, including awareness drives, enforcement measures, and community outreach programs in several districts.

Authorities have also combined awareness initiatives with stricter enforcement, earlier announcing action against drug traffickers, including property seizure and financial penalties.

The Srinagar march is being positioned as a key milestone in the campaign, with officials stressing that continued public participation will be crucial to sustain the effort beyond the initial 100-day programme.

The administration has urged citizens to share information about drug peddling and assist law enforcement agencies in dismantling narcotics networks operating in the region.

The rally concluded with calls for continued vigilance and collective responsibility to protect communities, particularly youth, from the impact of drug abuse. [KNT]
