Early trends from the Kerala Assembly election counting on Monday indicated that the United Democratic Front (UDF) was heading towards forming the government, leading in 97 seats, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) trailed at 38 seats, according to available data.
The UDF is led by the Indian National Congress, making it the principal Congress-led alliance in Kerala. The front comprises several parties including the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Kerala Congress (M) factions aligned with the UDF, and other smaller regional allies.
The LDF, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), includes key constituents such as the Communist Party of India (CPI), along with other left-aligned parties and regional groups.
Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, with postal ballots taken up first, followed by multiple rounds of Electronic Voting Machine counting.
Early constituency-wise trends showed the UDF gaining a decisive edge across several districts, while the LDF struggled to maintain its footing in many segments. The margins in multiple seats were reported to be widening as counting progressed.
Political observers said that if the trend sustains, the Congress-led UDF is likely to return to power in the state, marking a significant shift in Kerala’s political landscape.
Further updates are awaited as counting continues across the state. [KNT]
