Palestinian photojournalist Saher Alghorra has been awarded the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for his coverage of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, organizers announced.
Alghorra, a contributor to The New York Times, received the prestigious award for a series of images documenting the conditions faced by civilians in the Gaza Strip amid ongoing conflict.
Marjorie Miller, administrator of the Pulitzer Prize, described the work as “haunting” and “sensitive,” highlighting its portrayal of the human impact of the crisis.
The award-winning images focused on widespread destruction and the humanitarian situation in Gaza since October 2023, capturing scenes of displacement, damage, and civilian hardship.
Miller emphasized the importance of independent journalism, particularly as reporters face increasing challenges in accessing and documenting conflict zones.
In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Alghorra had earlier received first prize for war photography at the Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandie in October, further recognizing his work from Gaza.
His photo series titled “Trapped in Gaza: Between Fire and Famine” documented the realities of life during the conflict, focusing on civilians navigating ongoing hostilities and limited access to basic resources.
The recognition places renewed international focus on the role of conflict journalism and visual reporting in documenting humanitarian situations.
