Chennai, May 13, KNT: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday won the trust vote in the State Legislative Assembly, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government securing support from 144 MLAs and comfortably crossing the majority mark in the House.
The confidence motion received 144 votes in favor, while 22 members voted against it and five abstained from voting. The voting also witnessed support from a group of AIADMK rebels, exposing divisions within the opposition party during the crucial floor test.
The floor test took place three days after Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which TVK emerged as the single largest party but fell short of an absolute majority on its own.
The TVK-led coalition received support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). In addition, a section of AIADMK legislators led by senior leaders including C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani voted in favor of the government.

The DMK staged a walkout during the confidence motion, while the BJP remained neutral during the voting process.
Addressing the Assembly after the vote, Vijay said his government would function with “the speed of a horse” and asserted that it would remain secular in its approach. He also assured that welfare schemes introduced by previous governments would continue under the new administration.
The trust vote marked a major political milestone for TVK, a party founded only two years ago, which has rapidly emerged as a significant force in Tamil Nadu politics and ended decades-long dominance of the DMK-AIADMK political cycle in the state.
The developments also intensified speculation over the future of the AIADMK, with divisions inside the party becoming visible during the confidence motion. Political observers said the support extended by rebel legislators could have implications for opposition politics in the state in the coming weeks. [KNT]
