The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested former judge Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of deceased former model and actor Twisha Sharma, in connection with the high-profile death case that has triggered nationwide attention and judicial scrutiny.

The arrest came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed the anticipatory bail earlier granted to Giribala Singh, clearing the way for custodial interrogation by the federal agency.

CBI officials took Singh into custody from her residence in Bhopal after hours of questioning. She faces allegations linked to destruction and concealment of evidence in the ongoing investigation into Twisha Sharma’s death. Reports said she would undergo medical examination at AIIMS Bhopal before being produced before a local court.

The High Court reportedly cited material placed before it, including witness statements, alleged WhatsApp conversations and claims of harassment, while cancelling the bail protection earlier granted by a lower court.

The Twisha Sharma case has emerged as one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in Madhya Pradesh.

Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old former model, actor and MBA graduate originally from Noida, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12. The death was initially treated as suicide but soon drew allegations of dowry harassment and foul play from her family.

Twisha had married Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025 after the two reportedly met through a dating platform. Her husband and members of the marital family later came under investigation following complaints filed by her relatives.

The case gathered momentum after Twisha’s family questioned the initial investigation and demanded an independent probe, citing alleged inconsistencies in medical findings and circumstances surrounding her death. Public protests and sustained pressure eventually led to intervention by higher courts.

The Supreme Court later took cognizance of the matter, following which the CBI formally assumed control of the investigation from Bhopal Police through its Special Crime unit.

Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, has also faced legal scrutiny in the case, while investigators continue to examine allegations relating to dowry demands, harassment and post-incident conduct of the accused.

The arrest of Giribala Singh marks the most significant development in the probe so far and is expected to intensify questioning regarding the sequence of events preceding Twisha Sharma’s death.

The investigation remains underway. [KNT]
