Srinagar, June 9, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued a public advisory warning citizens against a scam involving automated silent calls that are allegedly being used by fraudsters to identify active mobile numbers for future targeting.
In the advisory, police said scammers use automated systems to place thousands of calls. The moment a recipient answers and responds, particularly by saying “Hello,” the number may be marked as active.
According to the advisory, such calls are often disconnected immediately after a response is received, but the active number may subsequently be added to databases used for future scam attempts.
Police have advised the public not to repeatedly engage with unknown silent calls and to disconnect such calls immediately.
Citizens have also been urged to block repeated unknown numbers and remain cautious while responding to suspicious calls from unfamiliar sources.
The advisory further asks people to report suspicious numbers through the “Check & Report” section of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
The warning comes amid growing concerns over cyber-enabled frauds and online scams, with law enforcement agencies increasingly emphasizing preventive awareness as a key tool in combating digital crime. [KNT]
