Iran Questions US Role as Israeli Strikes Threaten Emerging Peace Deal

A fragile diplomatic effort aimed at ending months of confrontation between the United States and Iran has entered a critical phase after fresh Israeli military action in Lebanon triggered strong reactions from Tehran and raised fears of renewed regional escalation.

The latest tensions erupted after Israel carried out strikes in Beirut following a Hezbollah attack, a move that drew criticism even from U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the timing as problematic given the ongoing efforts to finalize an agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian officials have openly questioned Washington’s ability to act as a credible peace partner, arguing that continued Israeli military operations undermine confidence in the diplomatic process. Senior Iranian figures warned that the Beirut strike could jeopardize progress made during negotiations.

At the heart of the negotiations is a proposed agreement intended to reduce regional hostilities, reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz to normal shipping and address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities. Reports indicate that discussions have included the release of frozen Iranian assets and broader economic measures in exchange for commitments regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

However, conflicting signals have emerged regarding the timing of any final agreement. While President Trump expressed confidence that a deal was close and suggested it could be signed soon, Iranian officials indicated that negotiations were still under review and no immediate signing was guaranteed.

The current diplomatic push follows months of military confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Earlier this month, Israel carried out strikes on military targets inside Iran following missile attacks attributed to Tehran, highlighting the volatility that continues to surround the region.

The conflict has had consequences far beyond the battlefield. Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, have affected global shipping and energy markets, prompting growing international concern over the economic fallout of prolonged instability.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the key question facing regional and global powers is whether negotiations can overcome the latest round of tensions or whether fresh military actions will once again derail attempts to secure a broader settlement.

For now, the Middle East remains balanced between diplomacy and escalation, with developments over the coming days likely to determine whether the region moves closer to stability or deeper into confrontation.
