New Delhi, June 27, KNT: The Union Government has, for the first time, publicly released the names of six Indian Armed Forces personnel killed during Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, with their names now inscribed on the Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice) at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

The six personnel identified are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar of Headquarters, 10 Infantry Brigade; Rifleman Sunil Kumar of 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry; Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of 5 Field Regiment; Agniveer Mood Muralinaik of 851 Light Regiment; Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of 237 Field Workshop Company; and Sergeant Surendra Kumar of 39 Wing, Indian Air Force.

Rifleman Sunil Kumar was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, while Sergeant Surendra Kumar was posthumously conferred the Vayu Sena Medal.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, following the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians were killed. During the operation, Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes on nine locations described by the government as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir before a ceasefire understanding was reached on May 10.

The government’s decision to publicly disclose the identities of the six personnel has triggered a political controversy, with the Congress accusing the Centre of withholding information about casualties suffered during the operation.

The Opposition also targeted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alleging that his earlier statement in Parliament—that no Indian soldier had been killed during Operation Sindoor—stands contradicted by the government’s latest disclosure. Congress leaders accused the government of failing to place the complete facts before Parliament and demanded an explanation for the delay in acknowledging the fatalities.

The Centre has not yet issued any detailed response to the Opposition’s allegations. However, the inscription of the six names on the Tyag Chakra formally records their deaths in the operation and adds them to the National War Memorial’s Roll of Honour. [KNT]
