Budgam, April 17, KNT: Police in Budgam district have registered 23 FIRs and arrested 24 persons during a sustained crackdown on illegal mining activities in the first quarter of 2026, officials said.

The enforcement drive, carried out across multiple police jurisdictions, also led to the seizure of 45 vehicles allegedly involved in the illegal extraction and transportation of minerals, reflecting an intensified effort to curb violations in the sector.

The action forms part of a broader district-wide initiative aimed at addressing unauthorized mining practices that authorities say pose risks to natural resources and ecological stability.

According to police, the seized vehicles include 17 tippers, 20 tractors, five JCB machines, two L&T machines, and one sand dredger. These were impounded from several locations, including Beerwah, Khag, Hardpanzoo, Chadoora, Kanigund, Doodganga, and Waterhail.

Authorities said legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under relevant provisions, while parallel action has been taken by the Department of Geology and Mining.

Officials added that fines amounting to lakhs of rupees have also been imposed on violators as part of regulatory enforcement.

The crackdown highlights ongoing concerns over illegal mining in parts of the district, with authorities emphasizing the need for strict monitoring and enforcement to prevent unauthorized extraction.

Budgam Police have appealed to the public to assist in the drive by reporting instances of illegal mining. They said community participation remains critical in identifying and curbing such activities.

Police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding natural resources and ensuring adherence to lawful mining practices, stating that continued enforcement will be carried out to preserve ecological balance in the district. KNT]
