HDFC Bank Launches ‘Vigil Aunty Says: Laziness Saves’ Fraud Awareness Campaign

Srinagar, Aug 14, KNT: HDFC Bank has launched a new digital fraud awareness campaign that uses comedy to encourage people to pause and verify suspicious requests rather than acting under pressure or urgency.
Titled ‘Vigil Aunty Says: Laziness Saves’, the campaign will bring the bank’s fictional cyber safety character Vigil Aunty together with seven stand-up comedians in a seven-episode comedy special that will begin streaming exclusively on JioHotstar from August 15.
The campaign is built around a simple premise: fraudsters often rely on urgency to push people into making quick decisions.
According to the bank, the approach covers common digital fraud scenarios including fake OTP requests, phishing links and digital arrest scams, where victims may be pressured into responding immediately or transferring money.
The campaign encourages users to pause before clicking a link, sharing information or acting on an unexpected financial request, with the message that sometimes the safest response to a suspicious demand is to do nothing until it has been independently verified.
The comedy special features stand-up comedians Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar Natarajan, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui and Kenny Sebastian.
Ravi Santhanam, Chief Marketing Officer and Group Head, HDFC Bank, said fraudsters use panic and urgency to manipulate people into making quick mistakes and that the campaign uses comedy to make the subject easier for audiences to engage with.
The initiative has been conceptualised by the bank’s creative agency FCBKinnect and is aimed at users of digital banking and online payment services across age groups, with particular attention to younger and digital-first audiences.
Vigil Aunty is a fictional character created by HDFC Bank to explain digital fraud risks through everyday conversations and relatable situations. According to the bank, the character has more than 2.2 million followers across social media platforms.
The campaign will be available on JioHotstar from August 15, with the bank positioning entertainment as a vehicle for communicating basic precautions against increasingly common digital fraud attempts. [KNT]
