Ireland scripted one of the greatest achievements in their cricketing history by defeating reigning T20 World Cup champions India in the second T20 International at Belfast on Sunday, completing a stunning 2-0 clean sweep in the two-match series.

The victory marked Ireland’s first-ever bilateral series triumph over India in any format and capped an extraordinary week for the hosts, who had already created history by registering their maiden international victory over India in the opening T20I.

Having stunned India by 34 runs in the first match, Ireland entered the second game brimming with confidence and once again outplayed the visitors in all departments. The triumph sealed an unprecedented series victory over one of world cricket’s traditional powerhouses and handed India one of their most embarrassing T20 defeats in recent years.

The Indian team, led by Shreyas Iyer, had entered the second T20 under pressure after losing the series opener. However, the visitors once again failed to deliver with the bat, suffering early setbacks that left them chasing the game from the outset. Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack exploited the conditions superbly, maintaining relentless pressure on the Indian batting line-up.

Ireland’s success was built on collective performances throughout the series. Captain Lorcan Tucker led from the front, while the hosts’ pace and spin attack consistently exposed India’s batting frailties. Their disciplined fielding and tactical awareness also played a crucial role in securing consecutive victories.

For India, the series defeat came as a major setback. Fresh from their T20 World Cup success and boasting several established international players, the visitors were expected to dominate the two-match contest. Instead, they struggled to adapt to local conditions and were repeatedly outplayed by a determined Irish side. After the first defeat, Indian opener Abhishek Sharma had admitted that the team failed to adjust to the conditions, while captain Shreyas Iyer stressed that international cricket offered no room for complacency.

Cricket observers described the result as one of the biggest upsets in modern T20 cricket. Ireland had never previously defeated India in any international format before this series. Within the space of three days, however, they not only ended that winless run but also secured a memorable clean sweep against the world champions.

The landmark victory is expected to provide a major boost to Irish cricket ahead of future international assignments, while the series defeat is likely to trigger serious introspection within the Indian camp before the team’s upcoming tour of England.
