Baramulla Jan 28, KNT: Residents of Ghat Palhalan area in north Kashmir’s Pattan town on Monday protested after a portion of land belonging to a government primary school was allegedly sold to a private individual, triggering outrage among locals and education authorities.

Local residents alleged that the incumbent Sarpanch, in connivance with his predecessor, sold a portion of the land belonging to Government Primary School Ghat Palhalan.

The school has a large campus, and according to residents, a part of its premises was reportedly purchased by a local resident identified as Hafeez Dar.

Locals said the individual recently constructed a shed on the portion of land situated near the school ground, raising concerns among teachers and residents.

When questioned by locals and school staff, the individual reportedly claimed that he had purchased the land from the incumbent Sarpanch.

Residents said the development was shocking as the school land is properly fenced and forms part of government property.

“It is shocking that a portion of the school land has been sold to a private individual despite the premises being properly fenced,” a local resident said.

Following the development, locals staged a protest and demanded strict action against those involved in the alleged transaction.

The protesters said a Sarpanch has no authority to sell government land and demanded that officials investigate the matter thoroughly.

“How can a Sarpanch sell a portion of school ground which is government property. Revenue officials who helped in this fraud must also be exposed and taken to task,” the protesters said.

Zonal Education Officer Nuzhat expressed shock over the development and said the matter had already been taken up with the concerned revenue authorities.

She said the issue had been raised with the Tehsildar for necessary action.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Syed Naseer also acknowledged the matter and assured that appropriate action would be taken.

He said authorities would ensure that the shed constructed on the school land is removed and the issue is addressed according to the law. [KNT]
