Monika Dhami Assumes Charge as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 1, KNT: Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Monika Dhami on Monday assumed charge as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Srinagar, becoming the highest-ranked Income Tax Department officer overseeing the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Her appointment places an experienced tax administrator and policy professional at the helm of a jurisdiction spanning two Union Territories and comes amid continuing emphasis on technology-driven and taxpayer-friendly reforms in tax administration.

An officer of the 2001 batch of the Indian Revenue Service, Dhami has served in a range of assignments covering policy formulation, tax administration and civil service training.

Officials said she has previously held important responsibilities in the Department of Economic Affairs, managed corporate and salary assessment assignments within the Income Tax Department and served as lead trainer for newly inducted civil servants at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie.

The Government of India has posted Dhami in Srinagar to oversee the department’s functioning across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and to strengthen engagement with taxpayers, tax professionals, trade bodies and industry stakeholders.

She was formally welcomed by officers and officials of the department following assumption of charge.

During her first interaction with departmental staff, Dhami highlighted recent transformations within the Income Tax Department, including greater use of technology in enforcement, faceless systems and simplified compliance procedures.

She emphasized that voluntary compliance remained central to the tax framework and urged officers to work toward strengthening trust and cooperation between taxpayers and the department.

Dhami also underlined the importance of grievance redressal mechanisms, taxpayer outreach programmes, awareness initiatives and stakeholder consultations to ensure timely resolution of public concerns.

An alumna of the London School of Economics with a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Dhami has additionally advocated preservation of local cultural spaces during her administrative career.

Having also served as Additional Director General (Training) at the Directorate of Training, New Delhi, she said focus would be placed on skill development and professional growth of departmental staff to help them adapt to the evolving demands of public service. [KNT]
