Jammu, Feb 18, KNT: MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq on Wednesday alleged discrimination in the allocation of government advertisements, claiming that several leading newspapers in Jammu and Kashmir are being sidelined while lesser-known publications are receiving a disproportionate share.

Speaking on the issue, Sadiq said he received what he described as a “strange reply” from the Information Department regarding the criteria followed in advertisement distribution. He questioned why reputed and widely read newspapers were not being adequately empanelled for advertisements.

“It is surprising that most advertisements are being given to newspapers that people barely know,” he said, alleging that such a trend raises serious questions about transparency and fairness in the allocation process. He suggested that some obscure publications appear to have undue influence, while established newspapers “stand nowhere” in terms of receiving official advertisements.

The MLA stressed the need for truth and accountability in the system, asserting that credible and established newspapers should be encouraged to sustain professional journalism in the region.

Sadiq also raised broader concerns about the welfare of journalists, calling for pension benefits for accredited journalists on the pattern of other states. He further advocated the introduction of structured journalism courses to strengthen professional standards and provide academic pathways for aspiring media professionals. [KNT]
