Jammu, April 27, KNT: A man identified by police as Abhineet Singh, also known as “Nagi,” was injured during an alleged encounter after he and an associate attempted to evade a checkpoint in the Miran Sahib area in Jammu on Sunday late night, officials said.

Police said a team from Miran Sahib police station had set up a checkpoint following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of Singh, whom they described as a “notorious gangster and drug smuggler.”

According to police, Singh, who is wanted in more than 13 FIRs related to charges including attempt to murder, rioting, and arms smuggling, was riding a motorcycle with another person when they tried to break through the checkpoint.

When signaled to stop, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police party and attempted to flee, officials said. During the pursuit, the motorcycle driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

Police said they returned fire in what they described as self-defense and to prevent any harm to the public. Both individuals then abandoned the motorcycle and fled the scene under cover of darkness.

A search operation was immediately launched in the area. During the searches, one of the accused, identified as Abhineet Singh, was later found injured inside a canal and was shifted to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The second suspect managed to escape, and efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend him, officials added.

Police said further details regarding the case are awaited. [KNT]
