GMC Srinagar Secures Approval for 10 New DM, M.Ch Super-Specialty Seats

Srinagar, Feb 21, KNT: Government Medical College Srinagar has received approval for 10 additional super-specialty seats in Doctorate of Medicine and Master of Chirurgiae courses, marking a significant expansion in advanced medical education in Jammu and Kashmir.
The development was confirmed by Prof. Iffat Hassan, Principal and Dean of the college, who described it as a major milestone in strengthening specialised healthcare services and postgraduate training in the Union Territory.
Under the latest sanction, the institution has been granted two seats each in DM Pulmonary Medicine, DM Cardiology, DM Medical Gastroenterology, M.Ch Paediatric Surgery and M.Ch Urology. The expansion follows the introduction of M.Ch Urology seats in 2021 and DM Neurology seats last year, consolidating the college’s super-speciality portfolio.
GMC Srinagar, along with its associated hospitals including SMHS Hospital Srinagar, Lal Ded Hospital, Bone and Joint Hospital, IMHANS, Super Speciality Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital and Children’s Hospital, operates over 3,200 beds. The institution treated more than 27.5 lakh patients with over 2.57 lakh admissions during the previous year, making it the largest specialised healthcare provider in the Union Territory.
At the undergraduate level, MBBS seats have been increased from 180 to 200 for the 2025–26 academic session. Postgraduate MD and MS seats have risen from 259 to 277. Additionally, DrNB Thoracic Surgery and FNB Paediatric Nephrology programmes accredited by the National Board of Examinations have been sanctioned for the same session.
Over the past two years, the college has also introduced Post Basic Nursing with an intake of 80 students annually, MSc Nursing with 25 seats and a postgraduate diploma in Addiction Psychology with 20 seats. Around 1,000 students are admitted annually in nursing and allied health sciences courses, including GNM, BSc Nursing and allied healthcare programmes. The institution also offers PhD in Clinical Biochemistry and MPhil in Clinical Psychology.
Health experts have termed the expansion transformative, stating that increasing in-house super-specialist training will reduce referrals outside Jammu and Kashmir for advanced cardiac, neurological, gastrointestinal and paediatric surgical care, while strengthening long-term workforce capacity in the public health system.
