Srinagar, April 17, KNT: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday called upon global religious and spiritual leaders to unite and raise a collective voice for peace and justice amid the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East, while addressing a congregation at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.
Speaking ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, Mirwaiz said that as pilgrims begin their journey to Baitullah, prayers are with them for a safe journey and acceptance of their Hajj. He noted that this year’s pilgrimage comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty, particularly in the Middle East.
Referring to the situation in regions including Iran, Lebanon and Palestine, Mirwaiz said the world is witnessing “immense suffering, bloodshed, and uncertainty,” with innocent lives being lost and populations living in fear or displacement.
He said that in such circumstances, Hajj assumes greater significance, not only as an individual act of worship but also as a collective moment for the Muslim community to pray for peace and justice across the world.
Mirwaiz emphasized that religious leaders across communities have a responsibility to speak in unison for humanity, urging them to advocate dialogue and peaceful resolution instead of conflict. He commended the stand taken by Pope Leo, describing it as a step that should be supported by religious leaders globally.
Calling for broader international engagement, Mirwaiz said that resolving long-standing issues, particularly concerning Palestinians, in accordance with principles of justice and international law, is key to achieving lasting peace in the region.
He also referred to diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and countries including Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt aimed at de-escalating tensions, expressing hope that such initiatives would yield positive outcomes.
Mirwaiz appealed to Hajj pilgrims to offer special prayers for peace, stability, and justice, stating that the world looks toward such efforts to help ease tensions and restore normalcy. [KNT]
