Consumers Decry Steep Rise in Prices of Eggs, Fruits, Vegetables

Srinagar, July 10, KNT: Consumers across Jammu and Kashmir have voiced concern over the sharp increase in the prices of eggs, fruits, and vegetables, alleging that the authorities have failed to regulate market rates or conduct regular inspections to curb overpricing.

Several consumers said the price of a tray of eggs has surged to between Rs 230 and Rs 240 in local markets, describing the increase as unprecedented. They claimed that the same quantity was available for around Rs 150 to Rs 170 until recently, resulting in a substantial increase in household expenditure.

Apart from eggs, consumers alleged that the prices of fruits and vegetables have also witnessed a significant rise, putting additional financial pressure on families already grappling with rising living costs.

Consumers further alleged that market inspection drives by the concerned departments are largely confined to religious festivals, while routine monitoring remains absent during the rest of the year.

“We only see market checking during festivals. Authorities should conduct inspections throughout the year, not just during festive seasons,” a consumer said, urging the administration to ensure strict enforcement of notified rates.

The consumers appealed to the administration and the concerned enforcement agencies to intensify market inspections, verify the implementation of approved price lists and initiate strict action against traders found allegedly charging excessive rates, so that essential commodities remain affordable for the general public. [KNT]
