Mexican Military Kills CJNG Leader ‘El Mencho’ in Jalisco Operation

Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the long-time leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in what authorities describe as the most significant blow yet to one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations.
According to Mexican officials, the operation unfolded in Tapalpa, Jalisco, where military units moved against a compound believed to be a strategic hub of the cartel. Oseguera was reportedly wounded during the raid and died while being transported to Mexico City.
The killing triggered immediate and coordinated retaliation across parts of western Mexico. Armed groups set vehicles ablaze, erected highway blockades and exchanged fire with security personnel. Residents in Guadalajara and surrounding areas sheltered indoors as schools suspended classes amid security concerns.
Mexico’s security secretary said at least 25 National Guard members were killed in the unrest following the operation. Additional casualties included a prison guard, a state prosecutor’s office official and around 30 suspected cartel members. Several troops were injured, and arrests were reported in multiple locations.
Defence officials confirmed that 2,500 additional troops have been deployed to reinforce an already heavy security presence in Jalisco, where approximately 7,000 personnel were stationed prior to the operation. Authorities said heavy weaponry, including armored vehicles and rocket launchers, was seized during the crackdown.
The death of Oseguera marks a major milestone in Mexico’s anti-cartel campaign. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel had grown into one of the most influential transnational criminal networks in recent years, known for its firepower, territorial expansion and involvement in global drug trafficking routes.
The full security and political implications of the operation continue to unfold as federal forces work to stabilize affected regions. [KNT]
