Over 1.2 Crore People Covered Under Drug Awareness Campaign in J&K, Government Data Shows
Srinagar, August 4, KNT: More than 1.20 crore people in Jammu and Kashmir have been covered under awareness activities conducted as part of the Centre-supported anti-drug campaign, according to official data released by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The data shows that the campaign has reached over 69.14 lakh youth and 51.20 lakh women across the Union Territory through awareness and outreach programmes. It also states that 8,565 volunteers have been associated with the campaign in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the official figures, the Union Territory currently has one Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), three outreach and drop-in centres, two community-based peer-led intervention programmes, six district de-addiction centres and 21 addiction treatment facilities functioning in government hospitals.
The ministry said financial assistance for preventive education, awareness generation, treatment, rehabilitation and capacity-building is being provided under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) to Union Territories, state governments, non-governmental organisations and government hospitals.
The official data further indicates that 5,851 awareness programmes were organised in Jammu and Kashmir during 2024-25, covering more than 84.89 lakh people. During the current financial year, 6,346 awareness programmes have been conducted so far, reaching over 6.24 lakh people. The figures also show that 28,366 persons have undergone treatment and rehabilitation during the current year, while 2,500 alleged drug traffickers have been arrested.
The latest data comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with concerns over drug abuse, with authorities, health professionals and civil society organizations repeatedly calling for stronger preventive measures, expanded rehabilitation services and sustained public awareness to address substance abuse, particularly among young people.
