Polythene Use Banned Across Pahalgam Hill Station

Anantnag, Feb 18, KNT: The Pahalgam Development Authority has imposed a complete ban on the carrying and use of polythene and other plastic items across tourist hotspots, river banks, forests, market places and residential areas falling under its jurisdiction, citing environmental concerns.
According to an Order issued by the Chief Executive Officer, PDA Pahalgam, Mir Nasrool Hilal, the move follows growing instances of littering in rivers, forest areas, parks and markets through the disposal of plastic bags, chip packets, water bottles, plastic crockery and canned drink containers.
The order states that such non-biodegradable waste poses environmental hazards and threatens both human and animal life. In view of the fragile ecology of Pahalgam and the need to promote eco-friendly tourism, all such areas have been declared polythene-free zones with immediate effect.
Authorities warned that any violation of the order will be dealt with strictly as per rules. Continuous violations may lead to cancellation of registration certificates issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department. Additionally, individuals found littering or dumping banned plastic items in the notified areas will be liable to a fine of Rs 2,000.
The directive has been circulated to senior tourism officials, the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pahalgam, municipal authorities, forest and wildlife departments and enforcement inspectors for necessary action.
The order has come into force with immediate effect. [KNT]
