New Delhi, May 2, KNT: Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh on Saturday alleged serious shortcomings in accommodation and sanitation facilities for Indian Haj pilgrims in Mecca, calling the situation “intolerable” and seeking immediate intervention.
In a public statement, Singh said the conditions at a pilgrim facility in the Aziziyah area were “shameful,” alleging overcrowding and inadequate basic amenities despite pilgrims paying significant amounts for the arrangements.
He claimed that families were being separated, with up to 16 people accommodated in a single room, and pointed to issues such as a non-functional lift and a single washroom being shared by multiple occupants. He also alleged the presence of stagnant and unhygienic water inside rooms.
The legislator urged the Haj Committee of India to take immediate action to address the grievances of pilgrims and ensure proper facilities.
The allegations have drawn attention to arrangements for Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia during the ongoing Haj season, with calls for authorities to verify conditions and take corrective measures where necessary. [KNT]
