Anantnag, May 10, KNT: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Jammu and Kashmir, Police in South Kashmir’s Anantnag has ordered the auction of a vehicle allegedly used in narcotics-related activities under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, officials said on Saturday.
The order was given by SSP Anantnag Amod Ashok Nagpure.
Police officials said the vehicle bearing registration number DL8CR0936 had earlier been seized in connection with a drug-related case registered under the NDPS Act.
According to officials, the vehicle has now been ordered for disposal after obtaining legal sanction from the competent court under Section 52-A of the NDPS Act.
Authorities described the move as the first such initiative in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir involving auction or disposal of a vehicle linked to narcotics offences under the relevant legal provisions.
Officials said the action was aimed at ensuring that assets allegedly used in drug trafficking networks are not returned, reclaimed or reused for criminal activities in future.
Police termed the development a significant step in the broader anti-narcotics campaign underway across south Kashmir and other districts of the Union Territory.
Officials said drug trafficking networks often rely on vehicles and movable assets for transportation, concealment and distribution of narcotic substances, making confiscation and disposal an important part of enforcement strategy.
By invoking provisions under Section 52-A of the NDPS Act, police said authorities were strengthening efforts to dismantle the logistical infrastructure allegedly supporting illegal narcotics trade.
“This is an important step towards dismantling the infrastructure supporting drug trafficking,” an official said.
Police officials further stated that the initiative was intended to send a strong message that properties and vehicles allegedly used in narcotics crimes would face strict legal consequences.
The auction process, officials said, would be carried out in accordance with legal procedure and under the supervision of competent authorities.
Police in different districts have repeatedly carried out seizures of narcotic substances, attached properties under NDPS provisions and arrested alleged drug peddlers during anti-narcotics drives. KNT]
