
Jammu, May 8, KNT: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday filed a chargesheet before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Jammu in the high-profile case related to the alleged assassination attempt on National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah earlier this year.
The chargesheet pertains to the March 11 incident at Royal Park Banquet Hall in Greater Kailash area of Jammu, where an accused allegedly attempted to open fire at Farooq Abdullah during a marriage function.
Police said the chargesheet was presented after completion of investigation conducted by the SIT constituted specifically to probe the incident.
Following the alleged attack attempt, Inspector General of Police Jammu Zone Bhim Sen Tuti had constituted a seven-member SIT on March 14 under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, to carry out a detailed investigation into the case.
According to police, Farooq Abdullah had attended a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall and was leaving the venue at around 10:10 p.m. on March 11 when the accused allegedly attempted to attack him.
Police identified the accused as Kamal Singh Jamwal, 63, son of Ajit Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi Jammu.
Investigators said the accused allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to fire at the former Chief Minister from close range.
However, police said the attempt was foiled due to the prompt intervention of security personnel deployed with the protectee.
The incident had triggered major concern within political and security circles because of the high-profile nature of the target and the serious security implications surrounding the alleged attack attempt.
Following the incident, police registered FIR No. 29/2026 at Police Station Gangyal Jammu under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
Officials said the SIT examined evidence, recorded statements, and completed legal formalities before presenting the chargesheet in court.
Further proceedings in the case will now take place before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Jammu. [KNT]
