Kathua, May 2, KNT: The Kathua district administration on Saturday imposed a complete ban on stubble burning, warning of strict action against violators as part of efforts to curb air pollution and protect public health.
Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma said all departments have been directed to ensure enforcement of the ban, signaling a stricter administrative approach toward the practice.
The move places farmers under direct scrutiny, with authorities pushing for a shift toward alternative stubble management methods. The administration urged cultivators to use machinery and facilities made available through the Agriculture Department instead of burning crop residue.
Officials said awareness campaigns are being conducted across the district to highlight the environmental and health risks associated with stubble burning, which contributes significantly to seasonal air pollution.
Local representatives have backed the decision and called on villagers to cooperate with the administration, emphasizing the need to move away from traditional burning practices.
The order reflects a broader push to reduce pollution levels and enforce compliance at the ground level, with authorities indicating that violations will invite action under relevant laws.
Further monitoring is expected as the administration moves to ensure implementation across rural areas. [KNT]
