Srinagar, May 2, KNT: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday rejected the Two-Nation Theory and warned that growing mistrust along religious lines could destabilize Kashmir, raising concerns about its potential exploitation by external forces.

The remarks place renewed focus on communal fault lines in the region, with Abdullah framing unity not only as a social need but as a security imperative. He said Kashmir belongs to people of all communities and cautioned that divisions based on religion have historically weakened the country.

Drawing on the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Abdullah stressed that India’s secular foundation must be upheld, arguing that any erosion of these principles could deepen existing tensions.

He said continued mistrust among communities could create openings for outside interference, underlining the risks of polarization in a sensitive region like Kashmir.

On the return of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, Abdullah said rebuilding trust remains the central challenge, indicating that their return is tied directly to restoring confidence between communities. [KNT]
